Moon and the Movement

The wider context in which the first vertical dance experiments took place was the beginning of space exploration in the 1960s culminating at the end of the decade in the first orbit of the earth and the first moon landing in 1969. The sight of a floating body in space projected on television screens around the world had a considerable influence on all citizens of the world, but particularly on artists at that time, perhaps prompting the first vertical dance explorations: happenings, or performances that showed the world a new perspective.
